CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

It would have been easy to tell Kyle they weren’t in a hurry because where Halsey and Brigham needed to be next depended on the response they were still waiting on from the Havalon Clan here in Ireland. That wasn’t Kyle’s business, so they followed him back to the warehouse’s front door and hit the road again.

Only after they’d settled in their two-room hotel suite with beers in hand did they start discussing everything else they’d discovered in the acquisitions warehouse. Almost by accident.

The only reason Halsey brought up Kyle’s fantastic story was that Brigham wouldn’t stop checking his phone. “Still no word from the Havalons?”

He scoffed and shook his head. “Nothing. At all. Like not even one of those automated replies. You know, ‘Thanks for contacting the Havalon Clan. We try our best to respond to all emails within forty-eight hours.’ How hard is it to let another elemental know you got the message?”

She looked away from him before she could laugh. “Maybe they only check emails once a week or something. I can’t imagine any elemental Clan has a need for a prompt and attentive customer service department.”

“Yeah, but I left a voicemail and sent at least three texts to three different numbers. And yes, Hal, I double-checked they were the right numbers.”

“Okay, first of all, we’re here. They know that now. Someone will get back to us. Second, you need to put the phone down.”

Brigham rolled his eyes and refreshed his email inbox.

“Now.”

“Damn it. It’s not like I asked them to meet with us for kicks.” He tossed his phone onto the cushion beside him and slumped back on the couch. “I was very clear. ‘An urgent matter affecting all elemental Clans.’ You can’t misinterpret that.”

“Hey, instead of complaining about what somebody else isn’t doing, why don’t we focus on our wins today?”

His gaze dropped to the copper sphere she’d set on the coffee table between them. “Yeah, I’m still not sure I’d call that thing a win, Hal.”

“I’m not talking about the ball.” She pulled her legs onto the armchair, crossed them beneath her, then sipped her ice-cold beer. “I’m talking about Kyle.”

“What? Why?” Brigham sniggered as he lifted his own drink to his lips. “You give him your number or something?”

“Here we go…” Halsey rolled her eyes and drank again. “His story, Brigham. The things he said have been happening here since we found the coffin. Specifically, since the coffin disappeared.”

“Right. That was a good chat. Hey, maybe I started a new thing, you know? Wanderers. Every monster story’s gotta start somewhere, right?”

“I think that only applies to stories about real monsters.”

“Yeah, but I sold the hell out of that fake-monster story.” He grinned and raised his beer in a toast. “Here’s to thinking fast and talking faster.”

“Dude, I’m trying to have a serious conversation with you.”

“I know, I know. Just…”

Brigham ogled her drink. She begrudgingly raised the beer and drank with him, unable to disagree that he had come up with a convincing explanation on the spot for what Kyle had seen.
